Description: 
A chocolate brown stoat like animal that is related to stoats and weasels. often mistaken with otters due to their aquatic life but are much smaller.
Distribution: 
Faily well established in England and a fair few in Wales and Scotland.
Habitat: 
Rivers, lakes any fairly large watercourse.
Predators: 
Otters
Did You Know?: 
Mink are introduced aliens to this country and are the main reason for the decline of the water vole. Mink are consequently subject to culling when they can be found, to protect the indigenous wildlife from their predation.

Footprint Description: 

Distinct claw marks give toes a pointed appearance. Both tracks show 5 digital pads, often also showing the webbing between the pads.Interdigital or "heel" pad has 4 lobes,with the 2 central lobes being larger.

The larger interdigital or heel pad distinguishes Mink tracks from that of Stoat, despite being of a similar overall size.

forefoot - 3x4cm, hindfoot - 4.5x3.5cm. Stride 30-40cm
Droppings Description: 
Mink droppings resemble those of Otters, and are deposited in similar spots. Mink droppings, however, emit a very foul odour, totally the opposite of Otter spraints. If in doubt,have a smell, you`ll never forget the smell of Mink once experienced!!
