A rare migrant producing two broods per year. In itself this is not unusual, but the markings and upperwing colours are so different you could be forgiven for assuming you were dealing with two distinct species. The first generation is fritillary like with orange and black markings. By contrast the second generation has blackish upperwings with white markings. The wing shape and maplike markings on the underwings, created by complex white veins, are similar in all individuals.
Widespread and common throughout mainland Europe. Rare migrant to UK
