This is a clump forming plant with oval or triangular leaves that alternate on the stem, becoming smaller up the stem. The flower head is pink and arranged in a dense spike at the top of the stem. The plant grows from rhizomes. This perennial plant is a hermaphrodite, having both male and female organs and is pollinated by insects. It flowers from June - September and the seeds ripen from August - October.

The Butterbur's dense and globular yellow-lilac-purple, honey scented flower appear from April-May before the leaves truly develop. After flowering the heart-shaped leaves, which are the largest of any native British plant appear and can be up to 1 metre across. The entire plant is covered in fine hairs.

Common Butterwort in an insectivorous perennial plant that has a rosette of basal leaves that spread out in a starfish pattern from which one or two stems grow. The flowers are a violet shade borne at the end of the long leafless stalk. The sticky leaves attract small insects that adhere to them. The leaf then curls around the insects and releases enzymes to break them down.

This is a poisonous perennial plant of the family Lilaceae. It is native to Britain. I grows from a thick, white creeping rhizome and the stems arched bearing numerous pairs of ovate or eliptic leaves in two rows. The flower are present from May - June and are greenish white, tubular and drooping, growing singly or in pairs from the leaf axils. The fruit is a dark blue berry.
