A greyish-brown fungus with whitish, yellow gills that exude milk found either solitary or in scattered groups on soil under Hornbeam.
Convex to flat when young, later irregularly expanded or slightly depressed, pale greyish-brown with violaceous or umber tinges.
Cap flesh thick, fairly brittle and whitish. Stem flesh stuffed, becoming hollow, whitish.
Adnexed or slightly decurrent, narrow, close, whitish at first, then a pale yellowish-cream.
Concolorous with cap, smooth, ring absent, equal or fusiform.
Locally frequent from late Summer to Autumn.
In broadleaf woodland with Hornbeam.
Habitat: On soil in deciduous woodland, usually associated with Carpinus but also known (much less frequently) with Corylus. Notes: Occasional but apparently widespread. Ref: BC
