House Martin

Description

The House Martin has a bluish balck upperparts, white underparts and rump. It's wings are broad, short and pointed and the tail is forked, but lacks the streamers of the Swallow. Both the wings and tail are brownish black. They have tiny feet taht are covered in white feathers. Juveniles have brown crowns and the white areas are a buff grey. They are easily confused with Sand Martins, but these are smaller, brown and lack the white rump.

Diet

Insects caught exclusively on the wing and their diet consists of flies, beetles and aphids, they can be enticed into the garden if muddy patches are provided to use for nesting material.
