A familiar black and white woodpecker, about the size of a blackbird. Bright red undertail, large white shoulder patches. Barred white on black wings. The male has a red patch on the nape of its neck, the female has a black nape with NO red. The juvenile has a red crown. The drumming of trees is very short and very fast.
Insects, seeds and nuts. Can also take eggs of other birds and small chicks. A regular visitor to the birdtable in gardens.
