Machair Areas confined to the coasts of Western Ireland and Scotland - a sandy, lime-rich habitat, usually species rich, normally as a result of crushed sea-shells.
Mala The small area on the side of the head just behind the lower jaw.
Mammiform Shaped like a breast with nipple
Marginal Along the outer edge of the wing.
Marginate (Of a swollen stem base) having a well defined upper edge
Marsh Wet ground but not on peat.
Mating Tube The channel in the male or female, through which the spermatophore passes to the bursa copulatrix.
Meadow A grassy field kept for hay production and grazed only infrequently.
Mealy Smelling or tasting of flour or dough
Median Birds - On the middle of the wing. Fungi - (of ring) positioned at mid-height on the stem
Melanized To make dark or black
Mericarp One-seeded portion of a fruit formed when it splits from the rest of the fruit; a carpel with one seed.
Merulioid With pits, or shallow tubes
Mesothorax The mesothorax is the second (middle) segment of the thorax.
Methanol Alcohol made from wood
Microspecies Division within a species where there differences are very subtle.
Middorsal Along the midline of the back, or top of the body.
Midrib Central vein of a leaf.
Midventral Along the midline of the bottom of the body.
Migration The movement of adults to feed or breed at a location many miles from their place of their birth.
Milk Milky, usually white fluid, exuded by gills of lactarius species when broken or cut
Mimicry A process in which one species has come to resemble a second, poisonous species, resulting in a lessened likelihood of the mimic being attacked by predators.
Moniliform Having swellings
Monocarpic Flowers once and then dies.
Monomitic Having only one type of hyphae
Mucronate With a short, sharp point
Multivoltine Producing several broods or generations in one year, e.g. multivoltine moths.
Muriform Having horizontal and vertical septa
Mycelium (pl. Mycelia) Vegetative stage of fungus, comprising thread-like / felt-like mass, from which the fruiting body subsequently arises
Mycology The study of fungi.
Mycoparasite A fungus capable of parasitising another fungus
Mycorrhizal Symbiotic relationship between a fungus and a plant in which the fungus penetrates the plant and exchanges nutrients with it. Often to the mutual benefit of both fungus and plant
Mycotoxin Poisonous compound produced by a fungus.
Mycotrophic Obtaining nutrients from fungi.
