This poisonous fungus has toxins similar to that of the poisonous Amanita species. It is found in both coniferous and deciduous woodland and also occasionally in gardens growing on bark mulch.
The cap is initially convex, later flat. Pale yellowish-brown when dry and honey-coloured, or yellowish-brown when moist with a translucent striate margin
Yellowish flesh in the cap and dark brown in the stem, smell of meal when bruised.
Gills are adnate or slightly decurrent. crowded, narrow and initially pale ochre, then rust-brown with maturity.
Brown
Cylindrical with a white, fibrilose base and pale honey coloured near the apex, darker below. The ring is borne high on the stem and is usually erect, membranous and soon disappears. Beneath the ring the stem has a covering of sparse pale scales.
Occasional to frequent
Found in small and large clumps on rotten logs and stumps of deciduous and coniferous wood, occasionally on bark mulch.
