We used a Robot camera, and I think the electrical release ran by cable down one of the tethers. The camera was mounted so that it always hung level (pointing vertically down).
It would be a lot simpler nowadays!

| | | Re: Aerial phography from a balloon you can also by radio controlled airships in the boys toys stores - i have never tried it but have often idly thought that these might be good for areil photography.
there is also the complete nutter approach of just throughing the camera up into the air with the self time set - dont try this with your DSLR though

| | | Re: Aerial phography from a balloon I am interested because I would like a better idea of
the interaction of the existing wildlife(principally Bats)
green corridors around my town
There are trees being cut down and their value is lost
as a habitat but is their a greater impact on the corridor
AP many years ago ran an article on a commercial venture
using a trailer with an extending mast to take images
I tried a fishing pole with 3-guy ropes and a pneumatic release
and found the change in viewpoint startling. This became a
quickly elevated 2-guy setup, peg the guys elevate the pole
and brace it by hand take a frame(no motor drive then)
the lense was a 28mm preset with an amazing resolution
A very successful experiment, very few failures
