OK the lens may be not be very good, relative to the alternatives, but I don't think that was the cause of your unfortunate experience. Seems as if you didn't take the time to learn a bit more about using a DSLR.
Automatic or not there is still a need for some reasonable understanding of how a camera operates. As has already been pointed out buying expensive 'golf clubs' will not make you into a Tiger Woods. Everyone must learn and practice.
