| | | Photographing Red Grouse. As I am fairly near the peak district I would like to try getting some shots of red grouse, and I am after some advice on how to go about this. What techniques for locating and approaching birds have been successful for others? What times of day are the best etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

My experience of Red Grouse in the Peak District is that you never know they are there till they erupt and scare you witless.
I have had 50-100 m shots across a gap.
Perhaps they will come to scattered seed and/or berries over several days, and you could use an hide? But I guess you would need to be careful over what seed you used. |

| | | Re: Photographing Red Grouse. One of the best ways of getting shots may be from a car, using it as a hide. I've got shots like that before in Yorkshire. They can often be found by the side of roads up in the hills - particularly early mornings. With a bit of practice you can get quite close without causing them to disappear.
Having said that, they are fairly approachable on foot. I took this shot in Dartmoor - it's not a great shot and the light was terrible, but I was able to get quite close without it flying off. The trick is spotting them early enough! |

Longdendale Trail Woodhead side good place to spot close to trail early doors.
Funnily enough I am going on a 1 2 1 training day next month in the Peak District where Grouse/Raptors/Owls are hopefully seen and photographed.

| | | Re: Photographing Red Grouse. We went to the wirral coast after SEO's and waders. That year was a really bad year and lucked out but learnt how he operates and got some great images from what appeared at first to be nothing.
I kept in touch and he's helped me with any questions I have. Very jealous of your trip to the peaks! Looking forward to seeing your images!
Get ready for that early start lol!
kind regards.
