Get your flash off the camera. If you're using the camera's pop-up flash then red eye (or with hedgehogs more likely blue eye) is very hard to avoid. You need a separate flash gun either on a bracket or hand held away from the camera. That's what I did for this shot...
The mistake I made here was in holding the flash to the left of the camera which produced the shadow in front of the hog's face. I should have held it to the right of the camera so that the shadow was behind the animal.
Of course, I'm right-handed so I'm always going to be holding the flash in my left hand and firing the shutter with my right. Therefore it's the hedgehog's fault for walking the wrong way!
