I decided to try RAW and searching for subjects spotted a Hoverfly with apparently only one wing. It flew off! both wings fine, I tried again, same result.
This got me thinking, when we go after most wildlife we use camouflage, or at least tone down our clothing. Some even camouflage their camera gear.
Catching sight of my reflexion in the patio doors I saw that the camera lense and especially the Stofen diffuser blazed out like a beacon and wondered if these gave the impression of a predators eyes approaching my insect subject.
I draped the outfit with a piece of camo scrim and almost immediately the subject was less "jumpy" removing the Stofen gave even better results.
A big thank you to Lord V ;
The green plastic cane works very well indeed, I did add a 3/4" thick x 2" wide x 8"birch ply platform with an oval hole that fits over the cane.
Just removing the cameras weight, allows a quick height adjustment, reapplying the weight locks it against the cane/support. The addition of a small wedge glued onto the ply platform keeps the camera square to the pole.
