Photography insurance

Can anyone advise me on a good and relible company for getting my equipment insured, got about £2500 worth... I only take pictures for fun and not professionally.

Have you ever had any equipment and had to make a claim? How good are they are paying out etc, etc... Any information would be grateful as i've been looking around and all seem pretty good!

Thanks Steve

Re: Photography insurance

Mine is simply covered on my household contents policy. Described as a "Kit" with a total valuation. Covers me away from home, also whilst left in the car provided it's out of sight.

Re: Photography insurance

Thats the thing i'm a student and don't have a home insurance, wouldn't really want to claim off my parents if even my house got broken into or if i had my camera stolen in the street etc...

Seeing as though i do alot of walking and climbing, and carrying my camera whilst walking the streets of Manchester! think it's best that i get it insured!!!

I had a camera stolen at Liverpool airport from my luggage, and since broken a speedlite and not claimed, it's about time i got my 'expensive' kit insured just incase it gets broken or goes walk about!

Re: Photography insurance

You could try Photoguard Photoguard - Insuring the UK's photographers - photographic equipment insurance or AUA Insurance Amateur Photographers Insurance - for cameras and other photographic equipment

They advertise in Digital Photo Magazine. I have checked a quick quote with each based on my own kit and they are both in the same ball park. Like most things, it's horses for coures. Have a look and see what you think

The trouble with E&L is that you have to notify them every time you take your camera abroad or you are not covered. In my opinion, you are not going to always remember to do this and that will be the occasion something goes missing or gets broken.

the other problem is that there is a lot of fine print especially reguarding cars and houses ( for instance you need to have a certain spec lock on all your doors in the house - whilst in the car you are not covered for unattended theft from the vehicle unless the camera isin the boot and the boot is seperated from the passenger compartment by a steel bulkhead - in practice this means that their unattended vehicle option is worthless for hatch backs , 4x4s , estates, MPvs , and arrounf 70% of saloons)

that said if you just want walking arround insurance their pro level cover is good for accidental breakages ,or thefts from your person.
