Peter, I can see your reason for manual setting, it is very well illustrated. I don't know a great deal about using the different colour temperature settings but I am aware of the principal involved. I can see you have the problem cracked as it were but I wondered would you still encounter the same problems if you converted from Rawshooter? Jon
| Jon, I've used RawShooter also and tested it against ACR and Nikon NX. NX is the only raw converter that can use all of the tagged information contained within a Nikon Raw File (NEF). So the problem not just ACR. It comes about because when Adobe approached Nikon for information about their raw files Nikon basically refused to give then any (i.e. Nikon want to push capture NX). I have friends who own Canons and after seeing the online tutorials on NX want Canon to produce software on par with it. In fact a few friends process their raw files in Adobe then use NX to make adjustments from either a Tiff or Jpeg. |

| | | Re: Andy Rouse Very interesting Peter. I too have moved onto digital though with a D80 and also do not use auto and have experienced the same difficulties with hide work but did'nt know the cause. That explains things. I arrived at the same solution through experiment but have not tried Kelvin though the facility is there. Where's the best source to read up from, internet? |

From bitter experience I've learned to ignore the "always shade" WB advice after a whole afternoon's Little Egret shots came out with a pink cast. Not good and involved a fair bit of messing about in PP. I think it depends on your subject. A hare would probably look better with a warmer WB.

Paul if you mind me asking what were the actual conditions? I shot some birds at the weekend and used cloudy in direct sunlight and they were a wee bit too warm but the direct sunlight setting was too cold so I chose somewhere in between. |

Direct sun is supposed to be about 5200-5300K and shade about 6000K so my custom setting roughly in the middle. The alternative to set the WB using something like a white card or Expodisk.
