i cant see anything worrying in those terms - you retain the copyright which is a lot better than a lot of other competitions , and giving them non exclusive permission to reproduce the entered shots is pretty standard on big comps these days

the only thing that gives me pause is the entrance fee - but hey a fiver is hardly going to break the bank

The EPOTY competition is a goal and showcase for emerging and established conservation photographers, and it is run for the benefit of the environment and those photographers who would like to use their craft to directly help something they care about.

Please don't be alarmed by the Terms. Copyright remains with the photographer, and the permission to reproduce entered photographs will not be abused. If all goes well (and this is the first year of the competition, so it is hard to say if it will), then these photographs will most likely be used only to illustrate next year's website. If there is enough interest from participating photographers, EPOTY will investigate the possibility of staging an exhibition (or printing a book) of winning images, which would continue the good work that photographs have done worldwide in publicizing the plight of the environment. It needs all the help it can get, especially in the wake of the 2 February United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (ICPP) report. An exhibition or a book would also, of course, raise the profiles of winning photographers, and give them more ground to stand on in what is such a tough profession. In either case, EPOTY would not proceed without the permission of the relevant photographers (especially since the images are entered into the competition as low-res JPEG files, unsuitable for anything but screen publication, so photographers would have to supply high-res files in order for an exhibition or book to look good).

If EPOTY can cover its costs this year, then hopefully the competition can offer an even bigger donation to an environmental charity next year. Hope you'll consider entering the competition. Take care, and happy shooting!
