| | | Need help uploading from a stealth camera I bought a Bushnell Trophy camera last week and although it takes video cips, some of the files won't open. All the videos come from the same session, so no settings have been altered. What I get on my computer screen is this:
where the first two files play fine, but the ones with the generic icon won't open. I don't know whether it's a faulty camera or what.
Can anyone help? |

| | | Re: Need help uploading from a stealth camera I would hazzard a guess that the files with the generic icon are corrupted in some way and this means windows cannot generate a preview.
Are they stored in camera memory or on a memory card?

Did you format the card after taking the files off? If they are still on the card it might be worth looking at the card through explorer to double check that copying didn't damage them somehow.
Also as Windows will normally see the memory card as an extra drive you could try the right-clicking the disk icon for the memory card and select 'check disk for errors' (I can't remeber if this an option for memory cards though).

| | | Re: Need help uploading from a stealth camera Not tried this, but look at Converting ASF Files
ASF files seem to be some odd format (and there are some odd formats about), but the Microsoft utility says it will convert them to WMV files, which most things will deal with. Hope it helps.

| | | Re: Need help uploading from a stealth camera You could use 'Super' (it's free) and will encode virtually any AV format to any other: SUPER ©
Also, have a look at the 'suspect' files with 'Mediainfo' to see if they're valid media files (again, it's free): MediaInfo

| | | Re: Need help uploading from a stealth camera In addition to the above, something else you might want to try is VLC Media Player - it plays pretty much anything and it has been able to repair some of my video files that windows could not open.

| | | Re: Need help uploading from a stealth camera It wants me to register, marc - is that legit?
Tried swapping the SD card last night and got no recording at all. I'm beginning to wonder whether the camera itself's faulty. |

When I click on the blue 'download vlc' box it opens SourceForge (there is a form on the page, but it's an advert, so just ignore it) and then a pop-up appears with the EXE download. You shouldn't need to register. If you're still having problems, let me know and I'll post the file on my site for you to download.
