| | | Re: First efforts Sorry, I was so astonished that I attached the image the post went off before I was ready.
After much angst, and advice from folks on this forum I finally took the plunge and bought a Canon 50d and 400mm f5.6.
I took them out at the weekend and after a couple of hours of grim light with me seeing how far the ISO button would go, the sun came out, and so did the sample in my previous post.
I knew that one day I'd have to step back to get a whole bird in with the prime lens, but I didn't think it would be day 1!
I'm really chuffed with the gear, and very much looking forward to the spring, with the new perspective on wildlife watching.
Thanks to those who advised and gave me the confidence to jump
best wishes

Yes that's the one, there were two others (together) by the swan feeding point too, though the light wasn't so helpful there.
Plenty of targets round the feeders for the beginner to learn some tricks with, but Water Rail was a bit of a surprise!

No Smew unfortunately, I didn't make it that far at the weekend, I was sidetracked by the Tree Sparrows and Redpolls, putting on a good show. Smew is a good reason to go back soon, I imagine the extensive ice cover had forced the bird into the area near the Kingfisher screen,
best wishes

Another good place for 'birds at feeders' shots and fairly local is Potteric Carr in Doncaster.
Willow Pool Hide has a feeding station in front of it and at this time of year you can see Water Rail, Woodpecker, Pheasants as well as the usual stuff. If you're lucky you might also see a Bittern and/or Kingfisher.
