| | | Best source of photos Can Anyone help with photos?
I have agreed to write an article on Centipedes for our local wildlife Group annual publication.
I would like to illustrate this with a few photos. I was thinking that a few hibernating Centipedes generally turn up when I am winter digging my garden and compost heap and intended to photograph these. Unfortunately we are still frozen up here so this is impossible.
I have Strigamia Maritima in my photo collection from last year. This will be a good representative of shoreline species I still need Lithobius Forficatus as a common representative of Lithobimorphs and any nice long yellow Geophilomorph will do as representative of the group. As far as I am aware we don`t get any Scolopendromorphs this far north so I will leave this group out. I have seen a couple of Symphilids about in the Summer so one of these would be useful as well as would a Polydesmus millipede
The publication is totally non profit making and the article is purely to encourage people to take up the recording of this interesting and neglected group.
I have trawled through loads of sites but those who have what I need are not available for free publication -even Arkive do not have what I need-. Does anyone have any good suggestions? The deadline for publication is early Feb and I am getting a bit worried.

I have no idea what species it is I'm afraid. This is the only half-way decent centipede photo I have as the beggars are normally too quick for me. There are usually some under logs in the mini-beast area at Crossness so I could try for them next week if they're likely to be a bit more sedentary at this time of year. It's fierce mild here at the moment though so they might be active again.
If you can use this one let me know what size you want - anything up to 3000 x 2000 pixels.

| | | Re: Best source of photos I can have a good look around my area in the next couple of days if you like and see what i can get for you. I have several species in the garden at the moment.
Though my photography skills aint that good so it might be a waste of time on my behalf? The ones i have got are really poor.
I think Bruce has a good photo of Lithobius variegatus. |

I had a look around today and found plenty of Centipedes about, but sadly with my photography skills and equipment i was unable to get any decent pics...as you can see
Lithobius variegatus
Strigamia acuminata
Lithobius tricuspis
Good luck with the article and i hope you get what you need. |

Thanks for taking the time to do this.

Dave P. | Thanks Dave,
It`s a bit too buried to really Id. The balance of probability is that it is Stigmatogaster Subterranea. It is exactly the sort of "Long, yellow job" that I need for an example I will see what turns up before I use it though. Thanks for your help though. It is much apreciated.

Steve | Hi Gerel, i have yet to delve itno the world of Milipedes as yet, and i'm unsure of a good key for these. But for centipedes i would recommend getting Key to the Identification of British Centipedes by A.D.Barber. This is only about £8.00, and it is really good. Plus, i've also found the aurthor very helpful in identifiying and determining the tricky ones |

I don`t think that there is anything better a round just now.
Buy directly from The Field Studies Council. They are cheaper than Amazon and the profits go to the FSC rather than to book dealers.
(Just "Google in" Field Studies Council for further info)

Dave | Well thankyou for your kind comments...i guess i try to compare most of my pics against the many superb macro photos on here, which mine will clearly not have a scratch on.
I will keep looking about if your happy with the shots i have taken and see what else i can come up with. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
