| | | Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2007 Apparently this competition launches on 20th January, closing on 23rd March. It is a global competition and I think they had about 18,000 pics last year.
But, maybe, one of our contributors might just lift the prize this year. For further details, including some of the entries for 2006, visit Natural History Museum and good luck to anyone who enters.

| | | Re: Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2007 Read a discussion about this in the press, saying that the fact that a petrochemical company sponsors a Wildlife competition. In a way I agree with the sentiment - especially when you hear a news item about another spill killing thousands of seabirds. |

| | | Re: Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2007 Point taken, but the competition exists and we should not discourage members from entering if they wish to do so.

davew | i agree that you should always read the tiny print very carefully , but in the case of the wpoty i feel that the possibility of a win and the benefits in terms of publicity etc that this would bring, outweigh my concerns over copyright issues.
as regards the sponsorship issue , every large company has an environmental impact , shells is just more obvious than some others, and as corporate sponsorship is always going to be needed to run the contests this is something we will have to live with who ever the sponsor is...

| | | Re: Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2007 Sadly the 'Shell' Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is no more - Shell have withdrawn following the recent eco-warrior activities - Vesty's vegan grandson sees off Shell - Times Online
Personally I have mixed feelings about this as I doubt that alienating companies like Shell is the way to go about improving things. Anyway, let's hope the Natural History Museum quickly finds a replacement sponsor.

| | | Re: Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2007 It would certainly be a real shame if the competition failed to run - there have been some classic photos in the seventeen years or so it's been going.

| | | Re: Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2007 The 2008 competition launched last week, and there is no mention of Shell, or other major sponsor. Not sure if this has effected the prize pot or not?!
Maybe nhm & bbc can make enough from book sales, touring exhibition etc not to need a major sponsor - especially one that might be detrimental to the ethos of the competition?! |
