steve | the 350D is a nice camera but it is a canon - As you specifically say you want a Nikon you want to be looking at the D40 or the D80 , or if you have more folding the D200 or Fuji S5pro (the fuji has a nikon lens mount)
You will find with all the major manufactuers that they have bespoke lens mounts - you can get third party lenses from sigma, tamron , tokina etc for most of the major lens mounts but the lenses for any given fit cannot be put on any other system (there are a few adaptors on the market but they really arent worth looking at)

| | | Re: Advice also please Like Eeyore says, the 350D is a Canon. I own one and I'm quite pleased with the results. I think I'm right in saying the D80 is almost the equivalent... I think it's slightly better.
Canon fit lenses are manufactured by almost everyone and if you're not interested in proprietary lenses, Sigma and Tamron make some decent lenses that a lot of folk here use and probably swear by.
As far as bodies are concerned I think one of the most important aspects is the feel of the camera. I suggest you try a few and see which feels the most comfortable.

| | | Re: Advice also please I recently purchased the Nikon D80 and also own a D70. Be aware that you may need additional/expensive lenses to photograph birds. I suggest you check out the forums at 'nikonians.org' they have forums on both specific Nikon cameras and advice and information on shooting (with a camera) wildlife. Do your research well before you buy.
Good luck
