Does the USB socket work with anything else?

If the answer is yes then.................

Unplug the camera USB lead from the computer
Right click on "my computer", hit properties, hit the hardware tab, bash the "device manager" button.

Hit "view" at the top and tick "show hidden devices".

Do you see the driver (slightly greyed out) anywhere?

I picked up a card reader from Tesco Technika usb2 16 card reader about £10, plug it in away
it went. Also there is some software with it which enables copying from one different card to another, cant say if it works didn't load it.

If it is like the 300D you will need to go into the menu and look for "Communications" and change the setting from "Normal" to "PTP". Your PC should then recognise the camera although it will see it as a camera rather than an external drive, you should still find the camera in explorer.

I can guarantee that specific software came with your 350D, unless there was a packaging mistake!

There is a disc that says "Canon Digital EOS Solution Disk vXX.X"

If you want Digital Photo Pro, pm me. I don't know if this'll infringe any copyright laws...

Edit: actually what you're looking for is EOS utility - Camera Window (on the solution disc).

Don't know how relevant this is but *without using Canon software* I upload my pictures directly to a folder (copy and paste) but I can only do this when the camera is connected to the computer before I switch on. If I connect while the computer is operating then it won't recognise the "new" connection ..... So, I would suggest, connect camera to the computer while the latter is switched off, switch on and see if 'My Computer' shows a drive for Canon .... whatever. If so, then you can copy and paste to your hard drive.
If not then you'll need to install the Canon programme which should automatically detect the external material - I've never found any need for this!

Thanks everybody. I've bought a Sandisk Extreme 3in1 Card Reader (USB 2.0) from Jessops It should arrive tomorrow so I'll have it for the weekend

Sorry to bother again but I've got my card reader and I've plugged it in and I can only view jpeg photos and not raw. Can anyone help??

You need the right software to view it.

As a viewer i use this Irfanview, it's free. You may need their update as well.
