| | | Camera Advice Please HELLO
IM NEW TO THIS FORUM BUT WOULD LIKE TO PICK SOME EXPERIENCED BRAINS IF POSS.
I AM LOOKING TO PURCHASE A SLR AND LENS. I WOULD LIKE TO BUY A CANON 3Od AND MAYBE THE SIGMA 50-500 LENS AS ITS SEEMS LIKE A GOOD STARTING POINT. ALSO I AM V INTERESTED IN PHOTOGRAPHING INSECTS AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW OF A GOOD MACRO COMPATIBLE WITH A 30d. I LIKE TO STALK INSECTS SO WOULD I NEED A 50mm macro OR 100mm AT MOST? I HAVE HAD GREAT RESULTS THIS SUMMER WITH DRAGONFLY PICS USING A BASIC FUJI F810 AND THE MACRO IS PRETTY GOOD JUST LACKS SOME DEPTH. I MAINLY WANT THE THE BIGGER LENS FOR MY LOCAL AREA OF BRISTOL TO PHOTOGRAPH HERONS, KINGFISHERS AND SMALL BIRDS BUT WOULD RATHER BUY A GOOD LENS THAN HAVE FALSE ECONOMY.......
THANKS V MUCH

| | | Re: Camera Advice Please Hello and welcome to WAB. You'll find quite a few threads discussing both telephoto and macro lenses if you trawl through the photography and equipment forums. Here's one discussing the Bigma (Sigma 50-500) for instance: Sigma 50-500 lens, any good????
The three most commonly used telephotos by WAB members would be the Bigma, the Canon 100-400 IS and the Canon 400 prime (I own the latter). You will find advocates of each but in reality they are all high quality lenses.
In terms of macro, the most commonly used macro lens seems to be the Sigma 150mm, this gives you a bit more working distance than the shorter lenses that you mention.

| | | Re: Camera Advice Please I don't know anyone in particular who is offering good deals on Sigma lenses I'm afraid. Maybe someone else will....
edit: although the site below will take some beating in terms of prices: Onestop Digital - Camera equipment at the lowest prices
I've never used them and they are Hong Kong based. Their prices are amazing though.

| | | Re: Camera Advice Please Hi,
Cameras2u have the best prices I can find for the 50-500mm just now. You won't get a better macro lens than the Tamron 90mm Di Macro in my humble opinion! Its a stunning lens. The Sigma 50-500 is a good lens as is the Canon 400mm 5.6 but also check out the Canon 300mm with IS its about £850 and produces a very sharp image. The Canon 100-400mm is a good lens but some copies are better than others and it is a little soft at the 400mm range.
Best wishes
