| | | Countryfile competition results.. Hey all,
I don't know if others submitted to this competition, I sent 3, no luck though. They did receive 65,000 entries though to be whittled down to 12.
The theme was "A moment of magic". Clearly the interpretation of that just meant "almost anything" as some images they showed were just standard shots. That said, there were some gorgeous images that I got fleeting glimpses of that didn't make it too.
Here's the link to the images - The 2010 Countryfile photographic competition winners | Countryfile Magazine

the trees on the island on the left just look wrong.
my other half commented on it as soon as she saw it, saying well theat's been photoshopped.

| | | Re: Countryfile competition results.. 'pot of gold' for me too. What do the rules state on how much manipulation is allowed? And do they request a raw file to back up the image?
Personally, I feel the image is a great one. Let face it. ALL images digitally made have been manipulated in some way. Even in camera before we get the raw file.
I trained watching old timers dodging and burning B+W's in a dark room. The prints were not a copy of the neg but the interpretation by the printer. This is an old debate which I'm sure will rumble on forever.
Was this image we see now, the image in front of the photographer, but the camera was unable to capture the exact replica with out the help of a little PP in the digital darkroom or has the photographer gone to far?
As an image, I like it.
regards.

| | | Re: Countryfile competition results.. Interesting to read some of the comments and complaints below the photos on the countryfile link. Probably best not to have a theme & just pick good photos for a calendar, as someone has already said? Any photo can be capturing a moment of magic I suppose?
Must be hard to choose from all those pictures, and a different panel of judges may have chosen 12 different shots as it will be down to individual preference in the end.Not keen on sunrise/sunset photos myself.
I think the rules of the comp state that you can process shots by adjusting the brightness and sharpening etc but not manipulate the actual content of the photo. The pot of gold picture could have been achieved within the rules I'd have thought. You can create many effects by using these controls in an editor.

| | | Re: Countryfile competition results.. Some really interesting comments on the Countryfile site. Really is a shame that it comes down to trying to work out if certain images are photoshopped or not though - inevitable these days I guess but not something I want to discuss here.
Whilst there are some really strong images, there are a few, in my opinion, that just shouldn't be in the final. Beauty certainly is in the eye of the beholder.
For me Pot of Gold stands out followed by Dish of the Day and Sundown. Some of the other images although lovely shots either just didn't seem to fit (my interpretation of) the theme (Incy Wincy, Magic Dragon) or just didn't seem strong enough images and I've seen many many similar shots so I guess am "dampened" to them.
Just my opinions of course and congratulations if you are one of the lucky 12!

| | | Re: Countryfile competition results.. The photos had to be submitted as prints too, and although that doesn't affect the subject of the picture, what the judges were looking at on possibly A4 size paper may have had different impact to what we see on the monitor as far as colour and the like. |
