| | | Leaping salmon..where to photograph them? Hi All,
I have an ambition to photograph leaping salmon and have a couple of days later this month for the task. I am in the midlands and dont want to have to trek too far so any ideas for good areas within a few hours drive? Or any top tips for success?

| | | Re: Leaping salmon..where to photograph them? A couple of hours may get you to J36 M6 near to where salmon ascend Force Falls on the River Kent. There's plenty waiting to run but they won't until we get a drop of water. You'll probably have to wait a little longer before the main run starts, Oct into November. Whenever it happens, the first decent flood will see a movement of fish upstream.
There's a viewing point overlooking the falls at SD507865, another waterfall just upstream too. |

That's one of my ambitions too. I have no tips as I've never tried it yet. As for locations, I visited Gilfach Farm nature reserve near Rhayader in Wales back in April and the reserve warden mentioned that they have salmon leaping the falls on the River Marteg. If you are west of Birmingham then this should be 2 hours or under for you.
Have to agree with the Woodman though, September is too early. I was told November at Gilfach.

| | | Re: Leaping salmon..where to photograph them? I could be persuaded! Or we could go for the Woodman's suggestion and head up to the River Kent. (Good name for a river, that! ) It'd be a bit closer for you plus I've still never set foot in the Lake District, which probably counts as criminal negligence.

| | | Re: Leaping salmon..where to photograph them? Last year I was recommended by Nick Baker on twitter: Salmon pool weir below Castle Drogo good for leaping - then it's a case of heading to the gravel upper reaches for spawning. Mind you castle Drogo is in Devon |

| | | Re: Leaping salmon..where to photograph them? Stainforth Force on the Ribble in the Yorkshire Dales is good. First heavy rain in mid to late Oct' is best, though have seen an early one once in mid-Sept.

| | | Re: Leaping salmon..where to photograph them? We'll do this deffo then Dave. Many of these places are not too far from me at all. We could make this our base and kip down here then make a weekend of it.
Anyone else?
