If you go for an old digital camera - then for wild flowers etc, nothing beats a Nikon Coolpix 990 - it will focus down to 2cms and has very good depth of field. Okay it only has 3meg - but unless you want to print bigger than 10x8 it is fine. Also it has all manual features to learn with as well as automatic mode.
So be careful in your research!
