Actually Chris, I was thinking more of a dedicated photography forum. There are many good ones out there on the net. For example, I am a member of a canon forum, with almost 40,000 members, with the level of expertise second to none. The photograpy forums is one of the best ways to learn stuff, as it is dedicated to photography, nothing more, nothing less.
Regards
Forgot to say - One of the best ways of learning is to learn how to "critique" other photos, and have others critique your own. You must, though, be prepared for the rough as well as the smooth. Telling someone their photo is "fantastic" "great" "Excellent" when it clearly isn't, is not going to help them in the long run. On the other hand, telling someone what works and doesn't work in the photo, and suggestions for improving it clearly helps them improve their shots. |

| | | Re: photography book Thank you Helen and probably for very camera specific questions the dedicated sites are good, but having had a quick flick through your Canon & my Nikon ones, I would not recommend them to a beginner. One or two more general ones there, but how wonderful to return to the calm of this site! I endorse your other suggestion of encouraging dialogue. I know this site is small, and I have yet to dare rate a pic, but feel there could be a touch more repartee and even more viewing of pics that look unpromising as thumbnail; I have yet to find one not worth looking at full size.

Yes, I fully agree with your post. Personally I don't rate that many photos (I mean by the rating system, not that I don't like them!!) but I do tend to comment on quite a few of them. I certainly encourage people to comment on photos if they feel the need to. I also always welcome constructive criticiscm.
