I also can't see any point in converting a JPEG file to a TIFF one - unless you like very big files. Data that was considered redundant and discarded by the JPEG converter doesn't miraculously reappear and any JPEG artefacts will be faithfully reproduced in the TIFF version.

Fuji's .RAF files are ridiculously big. My 9mp gives 18mb raw files. |

I'm using a Canon 40D. RAW files are around 14MB, TIFFS are 28MB. Working from the TIFF and then saving to maximum quality jpg format gives a file of between 4-6MB depending on precisely which route I take (I'm using photoshop elements). Saving to JPEG 2000 (jpf) gives a file of 8MB.
As ever there's a purpose to the question as I'm looking to increase my sales. So far the jpg limitation hasn't been a major problem (no lost sales as a result of smaller files, even to strongly commercial users), but large jpgs might help in some cases.
Thanks

| | | Re: File size to small to sell ? The size of the saved jpg file doesn't really matter as long you have saved it at the highest quality from your software package.
I submit regularly to Alamy and the files I send to them are anywhere between 3.6 - 9.5 MB these are jpg files saved from Lightroom in the highest quality setting available.
The tiff version of these files would be around 48MB.
This is from the Alamy site:
"Uncompressed file sizes of more than 24MB. This means you should make your JPEG file from an 8 bit TIFF file that is at least 24MB"
So the size of the resulting jpg is not an issue as long as you started with an 8bit file of over 24MB.

I think you are getting your sizes confused.
Windows explorer give file size. 5Mbyte is a pretty large jpg.
Agencies talk Mpixal. A 12M camera will produce a native 8-bit file of 36M-pixels. Thats 8 bits per channel x three colours. The jpg version at same resolution could be 2-10mb depencing on subject detail.
Yes you can convert from jpg to tif, I do as my noise reduction program sames in jpg.
Many agencies have now figured out that max quality jpg is plenty good enough.
I'm averaging three sells per day... go for it

| | | Re: File size to small to sell ? Some well intentioned responses here, but several are wide of the mark in interpreting the actual requirements for submission to well known agencies.
When they say 24MB minimum, they mean 24MB at 8bit Tiff, and not 24Megapixels, or 24MB Jpeg. etc. etc.
Most modern DSLR's will, at the highest resolution settings, create Jpegs of 3MB or more. (The specific size in MB will vary dependent upon the complexity of the subject, and isn't really an issue).
These Jpegs. can be converted to uncompressed 8bit Tiffs - resulting in an image files in the order of 20+MB. If necessary, the Tiff file can subsequently be upscaled to a size greater than 24MB. (If that is the agency minimum requirement)
Some agencies may well want submissions as Tiff, but others want them as Jpegs.
i.e. a typical image submission to Alamy may be a 2, 3, 4, or 5MB Jpeg. file, (This final size doesn't matter), that has been created from a similar sized original Jpeg, converted to (minimum) 24MB 8bit Tiff, had post processing work done on it as required, and finally reconverted from Tiff to Jpeg. (at highest available quality setting).
The bit that matters here is that any post processing work is done on the 24MB minimum, uncompressed 8bit Tiff file, and not on the original Jpeg.
See: - Discussion Forum | Alamy
Undoubtedly, other agencies will have similar image submission instructions available.

Mike. |
