A first shot with Sigma 105 Macro

By now means a good picture but as a starting point I am quite please with the first use of my Sigma 105. Very few insects about today and this was one of two that stayed around long enough for me to get a shot.

Lots of work to do on my technique but I can't wait until spring when I will really be able to put this lens throug its paces, especially on really small insects.

The important bits are in focus, and that is an achievement with a macro lens!

As for waiting till spring, try practising on cut flowers, abstracts around the house to get used to the lens!

That's better than the first macro shots I took. It is hard work if you are hand-holding and I am still learning. As carj said if you can get the eyes in focus you will probably get a good shot. To get the whole insect in focus you will need a small aperture, f11 at least which means you will need fast shutter and good light. Keep practising and good luck.

For a first attempt thats a good image.

Practice on household objects is good to perfect your technical knowledge but try to visit a Butterfly farm or tropical house this will allow you to get some valuable experience at shooting live insects that will not always play fair and keep still for you!
