New iLoupe(TM) combines digital camera technology with state-of-the-art microscopy to create the world's first digital portable field microscope/camera.
By simply attaching the removable microscopic module, which
features lens magnifications ranging from 60x to 150x, to a digital Canon SD600 six-mega pixel camera, the unit easily transforms into a fully functional field microscope in a matter of seconds.

From the press release it looks like they are marketing the product at forensic science and industrial applications for materials inspection etc, but Im excited by the plant material photo's you could get with such a beast.
At that magnification onion cells should be easy to capture, and who knows, perhaps even smaller cells and maybe even some of the larger ameobas. |

Interesting item. Imagine the pics of teeny moths, ants and spiders etc that could be had with this. Curious site though.. had a distinct amateur feel to it

Although lighting could be an issue with insects. I imagine that having things backlit would give the best results, im not sure how easy that would be with insects.
Another problem could be the depth of field, I dont know how to calculate it precisely, but at these kinds of magnification I guess it will be measured in millimetres, maybe even fractions of a millimentre at full magnificatoin.
At 150x a microscope would probably be one of those oil based jobbies where the lense sits touching a film of oil on the cover slip. I wonder how they get around this.
Yes, the page is a bit scrappy , its pretty typical though of PR agency releases. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
