Teenagers really shouldn't be using D3xs  | its not the camera that counts tho - its your ability - a photographer can have a hasselblad H3 but their pictures would still be cack if they didnt have the talent to use it

When I transferred from my bridge to my DSLR I was astounded by the detail I was getting before I had even got used to it. The bridge camera was capable of this but it took a really sunny day and a lot of effort.
Anyway, most of the previous winner's photos were their first photo. Usually along the lines of 'My Dad was taking photo, so I burrowed his camera and took one'. So most have no photography experience. I'd be surprised if they actually took the photo.
I heard about one person whose Dad set the camera up on a tripod, set the settings (shutter speed etc) and just told his son to push the button when a bird comes...
But their are a few winners that have put alot of effort in and it really shows in their photos

It would be nice if equipment was taken into account in these competitions. I don't mean discount entries taken with expensive kit, but take into account that a kid with a compact probably had to work harder to get the level of photos they do. It is after all 'Young wildlife photographer', not 'Young wildlife photo'.
Of course that's impossible though because they can't measure the effort someone put into a photo.

I've just been told that there are 1,600 images in the final round so I don't think we should get our hopes up just yet!!

Connor, that's only 3% of the entries that make it to the final round .
I'd say that's a pretty large achievement . |
