| | | Outdoor IR Video Camera Options ? Hi,
I have a badger set around 25 metres from my house and I would like to find a video camera to watch them undisturbed. Idealy wireless, obv waterproof.
I have found several that have memory cards and such, but I want a live video feed to my PC, TV is a bonus but not necessary, as is motion detection.
Im guessing the wireless range would need to be 100m + to get through the walls of the house, but there is a shed, around 10m from the set which I could put a booster in (if such a think exists).
So I want a nightvision wireless camera which i can attach to a tree say. Which doesn't just take still images, I actually want a video feed to my pc.
Any ideas, Ive looked around but can't anything quite right. Budget wise obviously the cheaper the better, but Im guessing on a couple of hundred.
Many thanks |

| | | Re: Outdoor IR Video Camera Options ? I've been looking into a similar thing for a farmer friend. This sort of thing was what I can up with - balancing performance and cost. We are only in the planning phase as yet, so haven't yet tried it, but it should fit the bill. Y-cam Black - outdoor bundle wall mount
The wireless thing is an issue. All the cameras I have seen are 802.11g (rather than the longer range 802.11n). There are proprietary non-standard wireless cams available with a 'base station' that give longer range, but they are less flexible if you want to add extra kit later and potentially are more likely to become obsolete - so I would stick with standard wireless networking. You could put a booster in the shed, but, instead, I would recommend a mains network to your shed (I assume it has mains from the house) and a wireless access point connected to it.
Something like: dLAN High-speed Ethernet II Networking over the mains 3 pack : Homeplug Adaptors : Maplin
With something like this plugged into it: 54 Mbps Wireless G Access Point : Wireless Access Points : Maplin

If you wanted to save a bit of cash you could run an ethernet cable from the mains network box in the shed to the cable and not bother with the wireless aspect - this would end up just shy of £300 total. Naturally, if you chose to add cameras at a later date, having the wireless already there would make it easier.

I would prefer the multi camera option as there is another set altho it is around 200m away, would be great if I could get 2 cameras and stream it to the internet. Got any good domain name ideas ?
Thanks a lot for the links, will check them out.
Matt.
PS would prefer wireless, if possible. |

| | | Re: Outdoor IR Video Camera Options ? 802.11g has a theoretical outdoor range of about 140m - so anything within 100m of your shed should be okay. You've still got the issue of running the camera - i.e. mains, but you can run then off a car battery for a long time with a 12v to 5v step down (the camera is 5v with a separate AC adapter).

Anyone else got any setup that is working, I want full video, wireless, and with the possibility of adding more cameras later if possible. Motion detection not necessarily required but prefered, and needs to feed to a pc not a tv.
IR range has to be atleast 15m, more would be good obviously, Im really starting out so would welcome any advice.
Thanks.
Ps, quit edit, power isnt too much of an issue but I dont want a memory card type camera, I want one that will stream video wirelessly to my laptop. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
