But assuming you are correct, the creative commons license will apply only to the version of the image uploaded to that site. The publishers have asked for a "large, high resolution (300 dpi) version" which Claire has presumably not uploaded anywhere under any license.

Dave. | There are different forms of Creative Commons licence - I don't know the Geograph website, however, so don't know if you get to select which form you want to apply to your images.
My photos on Flickr have a CC licence which states that:
1. I must be attributed
2. No commercial use
3. No derivative works
Edit: Just saw Dave's response - I believe he's correct.

I get really confused with these licencing thingymajigs
The publishers uses photographs from the geograph website often apparently so I'm trusting that they know what their doing!
I receive an email from them today confirming that their standard fee to me is £31.99 including a copy of the book, they have explained it is a limited print run in the UK only. I have agreed to this, I'd have been happy with just the nice feeling knowing my photo is in print but take on board the comments on here.
Now just waiting to see what the next step is.

thats absolutely spot on dan , the only time i'll give the right to use a photo free of charge is to a charity or school where they arent in a money changing hands situation anyway - or to a zoo, wildlife collection, sporting venue , band or what have you where its no so much really free as a quid pro quo for special access

Now just waiting to see what the next step is. | that sounds fair claire - though you might want to clarify if it is 31.99 plus a free copy of the book or 31.99 minus whatever the cost of the book is - most likely the former but it is good to be sure.
next step should be for them to put the agreement in writing and send to you to sign (tho some publishers skip this step as the email corespondence could be taken as a defacto contract) then you send them the high res file and they send you a cheque for your fee. (tho its possible that they will need you to invoice them for the fee - if this is the case they will say so and you should send the invoice with the file )

| It's £20 plus a book which retails at £11.99. I'm happy with that and have emailed them to that effect. Thanks for the info about what should happen next too, I really do feel like I haven't a clue at the moment

| | | Re: I've been contacted by a publisher - help! About fifteen years ago a book designer asked for the use of one of my photographs, and I had a choice of
a) Selling the copyright, so loosing all rights to use the photo myself or of selling/giving the rights to anyone else.
b) Granting permission for them to use the photo for a given period of time in a given geographical area for an agreed fee.
I opted for 'B' and I seem to recall they had permission to use my photo for 50 years in any publication published in Europe, and they paid me £120, and that was 15 years ago.
