Macro Tube for 350D

As some of you know I have a Canon 350D with the standard 18-55 lens that it came with. When i try to focus on anything that is too close the autofocus does not like it and I have to step back. A friend suggested a macro tube is a cheaper option than a new lens. Is this realistic or is it a new lens job.

If so can someone recommend a good brand for a 'tube' and where I may get one from?

Kenko make a range of tubes with fits for all major brands - try eBay - I got a set of Minolta fit tubes in perfect condition at bout 1/2 the list price.
