Sold my first print! Pricing advice needed.

Hi all...need to pick your brains again!!

A lady from one of the photography clubs I belong to wants to buy one of my prints as a present for her daughter, as she's sure she'll love it.

Needless to say, I'm thrilled about this! She spotted it amongst my exhibition prints and said she had to have a copy. Must admit I'm amazed to have sold anything at all, let alone before the club exhibition even opened!

This is the first time I actually need to think about pricing, as the lady who wants to buy the print says she'll pretty much pay the going rate for it, only I don't know what the going rate is

The print is a 20 x 25 enlargement of one of my puffin shots, if that helps She's going to mount and frame it herself as she owns an art Gallery and does picture framing, so price will be print only. I don't want to overcharge, but don't want to sell myself short either.

Just wondering what those of you who are pro / semipro usually charge, if it's not too rude to ask!

Re: Sold my first print! Pricing advice needed.

Congratulations! Great news! Well done Nicola - it's quite a buzz isn't it?

I'm not at all sure that there is a "going rate". I haven't yet sold a print direct but have twice sold an image file for the buyer to make their own print from. The first one sold for £50 and the second one beat me down to £40. Both were sold through an agency so after paying commission and tax I got about half that amount for myself. But I have had several other enquiries from people for whom £40 was way too much - I think they were expecting a print for a fiver!

Just had a look at Andy Rouse's web site and he charges £69 for a print roughly 16 x 22. But these are limited editions from a famous name and he also donates at least 25% of the profit to a conservation charity.

Can anyone else in your camera club advise? Maybe someone has sold prints at a previous exhibition. Failing that I think I'd mention a figure of £30 or £40 and see if she faints!

Re: Sold my first print! Pricing advice needed.

Congratulations Nicola - how exciting!

A photograph of mine was sold via Getty Images in America through a public-selling-to-the-press agency for around $800, and after commission and exchange rates I was sent a cheque for... £168. It sold a couple of months later in Sweden, this time for... £18 all told, I believe. I privately sold four framed images for £24 to someone at-cost only. In my experience an image is worth what the buyer can afford for it - as my sales show, it varies entirely on the individual and expected use of it. However, if the print is used commercially once sold you should stipulate a price, though that's not particularly relevant here.

I think as Dave says, £40-50 sounds like a good starting point.

Re: Sold my first print! Pricing advice needed.

Thanks both! I looked at Andy Rouses site as well and straight away realised that I probably couldn't get away with charging as much as his godlike self!

£30 - £40 definitely sounds reasonable, I don't want to charge her too much as she's a friend (and also very conveniently owns a Gallery ) so will see what she thinks.

I'm still over the moon!

Re: Sold my first print! Pricing advice needed.

Well done Nicola!
I wondered about this myself and have found some pro sites around £20 for slightly smaller than yours.................
Might depend on how much of a friend she is? You could also be up front and just ask for what she thinks - if a Gallery owner she must have an idea, but say you were looking for a minimum £20 and ask her view on that for future sales too?
Let us know!
Cheers

Re: Sold my first print! Pricing advice needed.

Hi Nicola

Well done on selling your first print - it's a great feeling isn't it and I hope this sale will be the first of many for you

I know it's stating the obvious but any image is only worth what someone will actually pay for it (not necessarily the same as what they can afford!) and that will often depend largely on the purpose for which it is to be used. For instance, the grant of licensing rights to use an image for commercial purposes will obviously demand a higher fee than an individual print sale to a private customer intending to use it simply for personal enjoyment or, as in your case, as a gift.

The means of sale may also have a bearing on the price. As Jason intimates, sales via stock image agencies or galleries will typically involve the deduction of a commission of 40-50% or even more and clearly this has to be factored into the price.

Your own direct production costs will also be relevant. For instance, are you producing the print yourself or are you having to engage the services of a printing company? Either way the costs to you need to be factored in and, if the latter applies, the one-off costs will doubtless be greater.

I should mention that in my case I produce my own prints on a pro-quality A3+ printer, using pro-quality paper/inks. I also do my own framing, using ready-made frames purchased from two suppliers at trade prices.

At my latest solo exhibition approximately 5 weeks ago I was selling A3 (roughly 16.5" x 12") framed prints directly to private customers (and with no commission to pay) at £65 each, with A4 framed prints at £33. I sold almost £1,000 worth of work in a single day so reckon that I must be doing something right

In contrast however, some of the same work was on sale at the same time in a 3-week long exhibition at a local Gallery and where it had been priced (by the Gallery) at £98 and £58 respectively - none was sold

Incidentally, I also sell a steady stream of mounted/unframed A4 prints at £21 each via my website and also via the visitor centre at the National Trust's Wicken Fen Reserve.

To me the message is clear - if you want to maintain a continuing steady flow of sales (as opposed to the odd sale here and there) directly to private customers, your work not only has to have public appeal but must also be reasonably/attractively priced.

As an aside, when I held my first solo exhibition last November one of my camera club acquaintances was horrified that I was selling A4 unmounted prints for only £15 each, saying that he'd want at least £50 for one of his images. When I asked how many he'd sold his answer was "none"

I went on to sell some £1,200 worth of work at that exhibition and my total sales via all sources during the 8 months or so since then are now nearing £5,000 so I think I've got the pricing of my work to my customers just about right.

I have, incidentally, also sold some images for commercial/editorial use (including greetings cards) with prices being individually negotiated or, in the case of the greetings cards, as a percentage of sales.

Coming back to the question of how much to charge for your one-off private sale of a 20" x 25" unmounted/unframed print, it's perhaps worth bearing in mind that framed prints usually sell for something approaching twice the price of unmounted/unframed prints.

The print you are selling is more than twice A3 size and if I can sell framed A3 prints at £65 each (and, as mentioned earlier, depending on your production costs), I would suggest that you should be asking at least this sum.

As your customer is a Gallery owner she'll know better than most what to expect to pay. However, as she's also a friend (and a potential avenue for future sales ) you might want to give her a 'mates rates' discount and offer to sell your image at the discounted - and be sure to emphasise that - price of, say, £50.

Personally I think that selling a print of that size for only £30 - £40 is undervaluing your own work and that of every other photographer but here I feel that establishing/maintaining your relationship with this particular (and potentially very useful) customer is the main determining factor in setting a price and I'm afraid only you are in a position to properly evaluate that.

I hope that's been helpful

Re: Sold my first print! Pricing advice needed.

Hi Nichola,

Congratualtions on your success.

I've sold a few A4 prints, mostly to friends and work colleagues, I've only charged around £10 - £15 per print, to cover my costs.

JeffH:

Which A3+ printer do you use?

I've been looking at the Canon Pro 9000 Mk II but I'm still undecided, I'd be grateful for your input.

Dave

Re: Sold my first print! Pricing advice needed.

Another congrats from me Nicola.

Nothing to add to what others have said on price, but just wondering, if your contact owns a Gallery and framing business, it might be worth suggesting she could become an outlet for your pictures and come to an appropriate arrangement on this basis?

Hi Dave,

I have the Canon Pro 9000, but the original Mark I version and I'm delighted with it

I bought it last Christmas out of the profits of my first exhibition and a few months before the Mark II version came out.

I too was very undecided between the Epson 2880, the Canon Pro 9500 and the Pro 9000, the first two being pigment printers of course as opposed to the Chromalife 100 dye inks of the 9000.

As a Canon camera/lens user and having had 5+ years of reliable output from my little Canon i865 A4 colour printer I decided to rule out the Epson and stick with Canon.

Also, an acquaintance who had been using the 9000 for some time had the use of a 9500 for several months in order to conduct some comparative 'real-life' testing for Canon and I had the benefit of seeing his report which, in short, concluded that whilst the pigment inks of the 9500 produced superior monochrome results the 9000 produced better and more vivid colour prints.

As most of my work is in colour (what would be the point of photographing Kingfishers in monochrome ) I opted for the 9000.

As for the Epson, here again I have another acquaintance who bought one at the same time as I got my 9000 and my impression is that it is much heavier on ink use than my Canon.

Doubtless the Mark II versions of the 9500 and 9000 printers are even better but I'm certainly very pleased with the consistently good results produced by my 'old' 9000 and which has thus far been totally reliable and trouble-free.

Go for it Dave

Re: Sold my first print! Pricing advice needed.

Oops..I wrote down the wrong print size It's actually a 16 x 12" print, roughly A3, I quoted the size of the frame it was in

Thanks for the advice all, I was also wondering about asking her if I could borrow some exhibition space, maybe even on a trial basis...she owns the Gallery jointly so it wouldn't only be up to her.

Around £25 to £30 sounds about right for a "mates rates" basis, will suggest that and see if she thinks it's fair I'd still get a decent profit as well as covering the printing costs. I use photobox so would ave to factor in the greater delivery and print costs for a one off.

thanks again!!
