| | | Cannon 20D or 30D & New Cannon 1d2N and 1Ds2 dates ? Hi,
Im thinking of getting a seperate camera for my macro work. Everyone I talk to still raves about the Cannon 20D even though the new 30D is out, whats the reason for this as surely the newer 30D has improvements over the 20D otherwise the 20D would not have been discontinued?
Im getting a second Cannon body as I did start off with Cannon before going over to Nikon so I will have a greater choice of lenses to use for my macro work, plus it means less lens changes and hopefully less sensor dust.
Also, has anyone else heard rumours of replacements for the Cannon 1d2N and 1Ds2? anyone know the potential relase dates?
Best wishes

| | | Re: Cannon 20D or 30D & New Cannon 1d2N and 1Ds2 dates ? Probably because like the D70 to D70s, the actual upgrade was minimal. The 20D was a fine camera on release and because the 30D did little more than add spot metering (yes Canon thinks it's not for mere mortal am photographers!), is still rated highly.

| | | Re: Cannon 20D or 30D & New Cannon 1d2N and 1Ds2 dates ? I agree there is little between the 20D and 30D, I bought the 20D when the 30D was to be launched and it was £00 cheaper, but within a month or two the 30D was the same price. Regards new cameras coming on the market, there will always be later versions and new technology. I tend to look at what I have got and ask does it do what I want, and does it have any shortfalls. Newer models are having increasingly higher pixel counts but as discussed in previous posts, just how many pixels does anyone need? Regards the 30D I would buy one now but for me it does not have anything over the 20D. Jon

| | | Re: Cannon 20D or 30D & New Cannon 1d2N and 1Ds2 dates ? The key factors for me in going for the 30D were the spot metering, greater range of picture styles and the 2.5" LCD. With my eyesight the larger LCD screen has been a big help.
On the subject of dust had you considered the new 400D, I appreciate the build quality is not up to 20/30D standards but the specification for the money is impressive. Tempted to get one myself as a second body.
Be interested to here from anyone who has the 400D and how effective the 'dust buster' is.

Gerry | My 400D arrived yesterday Not had any chance to test it properly yet though and obviously too early to tell how effective the dust buster is. It can only help though. The spec on the 400D is impressive and a number of reviews have now pointed out that the difference between the 400D and the 30D is largely down to body size. In some regards the 400D has higher spec than the 30D (e.g. 10mp v. 8mp). Having said that, the 400D (like the 350D) is not that comfortable in the hand, so I can see why some would prefer the size of the 30D. The 400D isn't as comfortable to hold as my FZ30 for instance.

Get the grip for it. I was showing Steve (Fourwings) the 350, with the grip, at the weekend and he and his mates were pretty impressed at how it felt. It bulks it out to bigger than the 30D for example and really does make a huge difference.

The battery grip fits on the bottom though doesn't it, so would increase the weight but wouldn't actually change the hand grip or how you hold the camera?

| | | Re: Cannon 20D or 30D & New Cannon 1d2N and 1Ds2 dates ? As a Nikon user i'd say look at the D80, its tough, 10mp and has the best flash system on the market. ISO performance is ok like the D200, and nikon also offer the 105 VR Macro too.
In canon the 20D is fine, and there is no advantage going to the 30D or 1DII either. unless you need 8fps. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
