Cannon 20D or 30D & New Cannon 1d2N and 1Ds2 dates ?

I was out with a mate who has the 30D the other day, ( I have the 20D) and although there aint a lot to chose between them in terms of performance, one thing that struck me was the size of the lcd on the 30 , nearly double that of the 20 - If you chimp a lot this could be important , doubly so if you are using the zoom function to check your macro work. Whether this is worth the extra moola will come down to personal choice - Tho if you do want a 20 you better be quick cos stocks must be pretty depleted by now.

I would suggest that anyone using canons consider the battery pack, I have one for the
300D and the 20D, they transform the camera feel, considerably extend battery life and make for a much more substantial piece of equipment. The EOS 1s of course are a different matter but the lower range models - have a look I don't think you will be disappointed. oh and don't forget extra batteries, I got mine from 7day shop - very cheap and totally reliable!! May get the 30D for my macro work although the 1d2n looks to be a fine beast too, shame the 1Ds2 dosent have 8fps.

Yes, I did get the lens but it had a problem with it so I sent it back for a check up and as they couldn't replace the lens for sometime I requested a refund.

If I was buying a camera purely for macro I don't think I would get an expensive one. In most instances I use fairly standard settings and I don't need a fast motor drive or a big buffer. I would tend to spend my money on good lenses as opposed to a high spec body. The 300D produces first rate macro shots, as I am sure would the 350D. Jon

I agree with Jon, although I own a 20D and use it as my main macro camera, the same results could be obtained with the much cheaper 350D.

As Boddie stated earlier I was amazed with how superbly this little camera handles once the battery grip is fitted, it feels brilliant and very well balanced.

My advice would be to get a new 400D and fit it with a battery grip, then spend all those notes you saved on a great macro lens as thats the bit that makes the difference to your images.
I can highly reccomend the Sigma 150 f2.8 EX DG HSM macro.

I have had both 20D and 30D (lost the 20D).

For me the bigger screen barely matters, as I turn it off most of the time. I can't tell critical focussing even with glasses and the bigger screen on 30D - its quicker and easier to take several photos and wait till home.

The higher frames per second is useful for birds when moving.

I use spot focussing most of the time now - seems better for birds and flowers.

But if budget is tight, put the extra in the glass / lenses. Both cameras will take soft shots with soft lenses!

Where the larger LCD screen comes into its own is not as an aid to focusing or framing but as a means of checking exposure details and allowing the opportunity to retake the shot and avoid missed opportunities. Nothing worse than getting home and finding burnt out highlights and lost detail that cannot be retrieved with software.

The highlight alert and histogram in the shooting information display are powerful tools and a key advantage over film and I would strongly advise anyone to make full use of them to avoid dissapointment later. As for the size of screen I would rather view this information on a 2.5" screen as opposed to 1.8".

Sure you can bracket but why take the risk.

I take your point but I find the 20D screen perfectly adequate for the highlights and histogram, I don't tend to use it to check image optical quality, usually it is not bright enough and I saw the image anyway in the viewfinder! Jon
