| | | Wildlife Photographer of the Year Did anyone else enter this year?
They have now picked the winners, runners-up and commendeds although they're not announcing until October. I think I'm fairly safe in announcing right now that none of my entries were among them!
None of mine even made it to the final round of judging but 10 of them (out of 21 submitted) made it to the semi-finals. In truth, there were only three that I thought stood even the slimmest chance of getting anywhere and one of those was booted out in the first round.
Just wait til next year!

you arent the only one dave - i only entered 5 and none of them got beyond the initial selection - but take heart I remember Andy Rouse saying his images got booted too.
The trouble with WPOTY is that the standard is incredibly high and you get people like lanting, rouse, benvie etc entering - those at our level have a better chance with the mid level big magazine comps like PPOTY, OPOTY etc.
tho that said rouse won when he was unknown, and wabs fergus (wolfhill) won his age group category one year and came second the next so it can be done.
Also a number of pros , rouse included have expressed doubts about the judging and selection (remember the year when a gorrila in a zoo won , how is that "wildlife" ) so even if your pics are good enough there is a large element of luck in getting picked.

| | | Re: Wildlife Photographer of the Year my two entries both reached the semi-finals It would be interesting to know how many of the 43,000 images were rejected at each stage.
I'm impressed you entered 21 images Dave! I thought there was a limit

| | | Re: Wildlife Photographer of the Year its certainly possible to enter too many, from the wpoty website Quote: |
Finally, if you’re aged 18–26 and considering entering for the Eric Hosking award, there is one golden rule: critical editing. Make sure all the pictures you enter are strong. There were some fabulous images among last year’s entries, but we didn’t pick an overall winner because the best shots were let down by weak ones in the same portfolios.
|
moral of the story is that is better to enter 5 excellent shots alone, than a portfolio of 20 with 5 excellent shots and 15 mediocre ones for padding. (NB this is a general observation - i'm not suggesting that dave or matt or anyone else is guilty of this)
the full "inside tips" section i took this from is well worth a read too Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year - Enter online

You're already getting some fine shots and with practice and experience they can only get better. Quote:

Seriously, I'll probably enter fewer next year as some of the ones I entered this year were just "fillers" that I didn't really expect to get anywhere. The trouble is that one of these "fillers" made it to the semi-final while one of my personal favourites didn't. Both in the "In Praise of Plants" category so it's likely that the judges were looking for something different in that one.
I will definitely enter again, if only because of Mark Cawardine's closing paragraph: "Don’t be the person who wanders around the exhibition of all the wonderful, winning pictures telling their friends ‘I could have taken a better picture than that’ – be the person who had a go, who got out there and took an amazing photo. Even if you don’t actually win, your photography will undoubtedly benefit from the process. And remember, you’ve got to be in it to win it." Dave P.

| | | Re: Wildlife Photographer of the Year It was a great achievement to even get to the semis though, probably a lot better than I'd have done, and definitely something to be proud of! your photos are always enviably fab!!
Maybe I'll have a go next year...I won the monthly competition at my local camera club last month with one of my kite shots, which has given me a much needed confidence boost to try for some more ambitious competitions.
Guess we've all got to keep trying!! |
