The cheaper models often have a poor kit lens fitted. One of the famous makes has a kit lens that's considered particularly dire - often referred to as a coke bottle bottom!

Mike | Most lenses have a "sweet spot" there are several threads on here about "testing" your lense to find the best aperture/shutter speed
Use a good tripod and remote release start at around f8@ 1/250sec
in good light. Use a brick wall or a sheet of newspaper, something with
plenty of detail, mounted vertically on a board to keep it flat.
ASA 200 and work through apertures at a fixed shutter speed this
should give you a better opinion of your lense
