Quality lenses don't go out of date.
The same is not quite so true of dslr bodies, but I've sold enough pics from my D70 to buy several D300's, but I've sold B******ll from the D300  .
And scanned slides are still selling 
There's more to it than megapixels

Apparently the 50D could have been a lot better but Canon decided it could effect the sales of it's next model up that was a lot more expensive, it seems the 50D might have been held back deliberately
