Welshgold we all have to start somewhere and best place is out in the field holding your field guide and sporting a pair of bins. Notebook is always good too. Bird sound is also a great way to 'spot' birds you can't see, as jonnyblades says. This kind of knowledge tends to build and build and is mostly unforgettable.......well except the odd wader, and the odd gull ... oh and juvenielles lol

For the novice bird watcher I always suggest that they avoid guides with Europe in the title, as it will include so many species that never or rarely occur in the British Isles, and will only lead to confusion...Bob
