Thanks again, to be honest I didn't expect the D300 to be as good as it is at ISO 1000 plus either, so was very pleasantly surprised yesterday evening when I tried it out and found it to be very good indeed. It's in a totally different league from my old D60 in most things I've attempted with it so far. Best £900 I've ever spent!

The D300 does have very good hi iso capabilities but the exposure has to be spot on. I've found extra detail by turning the hi iso noise reduction off and using noise removal software to help instead. You can see the detail improve when you turn it off in NX even when set to low!

Also don't pixel peep. Alot of the noise is virtually invisible when printed to A3 or below!

Thanks so much for all of the advice!! I lost the light towards the end...but overall I'm really pleased with the shots I've looked at so far. Here are a few that I've sorted out.....there are still about 300 to go!!

Reasonable attempt at panning with slower shutter speed....

It certainly is!! I've been there at least 6 times and could never get bored with the place.

Thanks for the comments all, it's nice to finally feel that I'm improving!!

I've posted a few more pics on the Gallery now that I've had a chance to sort them...including this action shot!! The poor buzzard obviously didn't know what was coming!

It was interesting to see on this visit that the kites wouldn't come down to feed unless a buzzard or crow was already there, which they would then subject to a dive bombing. I'm wondering if they were being wary of the large number of visitors in the birding hides...a lot more kites came down once it was only me left on my tod in the photography one!
