| | | Photographers Beware Appreciate this isn't a 'wildlife' topic but one I thought worth raising awareness of... BBC NEWS | UK | Is it a crime to take pictures?
From today, anyone taking a photograph of a police officer could be deemed to have committed a criminal offence under a new law - Section 76 of the Counter Terrorism Act - which has come into force.
It permits the arrest of anyone found "eliciting, publishing or communicating information" relating to members of the armed forces, intelligence services and police officers, which is "likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism".
That means anyone taking a picture of one of those people could face a fine or a prison sentence of up to 10 years, if a link to terrorism is proved.
Whilst I am in no way trying to be alarmist regarding yet another law from the OESI, like many laws, if interpreted and implemented with a modicum of common sense it should be for the 'greater-good' - however there is always the potential for one of us to be approached by an enthusiastic 'officer of the leur' hell-bent on meeting his/her arrest targets - just be careful who you point your camera at |

| | | re: Photographers Beware This 'law' had been proposed for ages, and it's actually come into play? Cheers for the heads up, though I don't usually take pictures of men in uniform |

Not if he's getting married in his anti-terrorist uniform Gill.
Your post reminded me of an episode of Only Fools and Horses, where Rodney and his wife dress up in each other's fantasy, she as a Policewoman and Rodney as Russell Crowe in Gladiator.

| | | re: Photographers Beware I suppose you can see the logic (if you squint really tight), but sounds crazy, I heard that you couldn't take pictures of govenrment buildings, police stations etc. What about houses of parliament etc... |

| | | re: Photographers Beware Last week's edition of Law in Action on Radio 4 had a section on the increasing harrassment of photographers who are lawfully taking pictures in public places. Well worth a listen: BBC NEWS | Programmes | Law in Action | Conflicting Rights
Probably the most important thing I picked up from it is that a policeman never has the right to delete your photos. If he does it is criminal damage. When you think about it this makes perfect sense - if he suspects that you are a terrorist then the photos are evidence and shouldn't be destroyed, and if he doesn't think you're a terrorist then he has no legal reason to delete your photos.
Dave P.
P.s. Congrats from me too Gill!
