Greater Spotted Woodpecker

Just wanted to share this shot I took of a Greater Spotted Woodpecker that I saw yesterday in the tree on the disused railway line that runs behind my garden.

The picture is a 100% crop.

Every winter I enjoy watching these coming to the bird feeders in my garden! On the odd occasion the pair have brought their young! What a sight!

And there was I thinking that it was an uncommon sight. A book I have says that you need a hide to get a good picture of one. I guess you probably do if you want to get close enough to get a good picture of one. Mine was rather blurred because I didn't have time to set up a tripod and there is some chromatic aberation with the heavy contrast with the bleached out sky. And the focusing could be better. Lots of learning points. But I was excited to get a picture at all.

I know I'm probably being pedantic, but the correct name is Great Spotted Woodpecker.

I get them on the tree right outside my living room window.

Great photo Dan, we have always found it hard to get a good photo. You see them on a tree & then they`re gone Welcome to WAB by the way.
