| | | the sky i took this out my window, its quite bright and sunny with white clouds, but when i turned the exposure right down i got this
if you look in the center, its got some colours, those aren't edited, thats how it came off the camera.
anyone know why this happens?
doesn't half make for a fantastic photo though

| | | Re: the sky Looks like it might be a Parhelion (or Sun Dog) which is basically an optical illusion caused by light refracting through ice particles in high level clouds.
(That's my best guess anyway).

| | | Re: the sky A partial cloudbow from diffration of the light travelling through the water droplets in the cloud? It wouldn't normally be visible without the exposure turned down. Cloudbow
I don't think it's a sundog. Sundogs appear either side of the sun: Frequent Halos

| | | Re: the sky Form Jim's useful diagram, looks like an upper tangent arc. Pics of these from the web look similar to me Very pretty.

They often ( but not always) appear at each side of, or above and below the sun. Sometimes in all four positions.
I thought in this instance it might just be a singular parhelion, or it might be that its twin could be hidden behind the obscuring dark clouds below the sun in this photo.
I personally think it less likely to be a cloud bow, given its proximity to the sun in the photo.

Mike. EDIT - Given that all these phenomenon are basically caused by the same thing - I concede - It's not worth arguing regarding the name.

| | | Re: the sky yes! if you look closely its like a faint raindow. so i'd presume its the same principle of refraction
thanks.
what do you think of the photo?

It goes to show that the simplest of subjects can make an effective image.
Most people wouldn't have spotted the potential in the first place.
The two birds add a little bit extra as well.
