You learn something new every day | Yes you have - and by not falling into the trap of mentioning any of the colloquial or obtuse scientific names mentioned in the thread, as Stephen Fry would say: - "And tonight's winner is RoseStones, with a score of -23" or something similar.
I might just open up another bag of worms here - I've changed my mind on my original opinion, I now think it's just an iridescent cloud.
We never tire of challenging each other's opinions about such things. All good fun.

Looks likely - it says that:
"most often occurs close to the sun. It is best seen when the sun is hidden".
Both these condition are met in Squishy's image.

| | | Re: the sky Cheers Jim.
Yes, having looked at this site, I'll settle for that.
I have a couple of 35mm transparencies somewhere, (taken years ago) which show a very similar cloud colouring to squishy's photo, but on a less cloudy day.
If I can find them, I'll scan them in and post them here.

I'm afraid mine weren't as colourful as that. These two pics taken in Cornwall 1988.

| | | Re: the sky Yours are OK though. Certainly the phenomenon is illustrated.
I must look up to the sky more often for these phenomena. The atoptics site has aroused my interest!
