for a good lens the 70-200 f2.8 L series wouldn't go amiss on the 30D or
a more average lens like the 50-500 Sigma if you want the range. Personally I would go for the 70-200 it is razor sharp

Another good Canon, I have one but for sharp sharp images and a fast lens the 70-200 gets my vote, got one of these as well

I think you should all get Nikons and discard your Canon'ite sandles

But if you must, the mid range zooms as mentioned are a good buy. Very versatile for a wide range of subjects.

'What' Nikon make cameras?

Another vote for the Canon 70-200L, super lens and works well with the tc's and extention tubes. IS is especially good if your on a walk about.

You can get it to af from 40cm away with a 1.4tc and a 15mm ext at full zoom (ie 280mm), stick that on a 1.6 crop factor and your getting pretty close without scaring off the subject.
