Look forward to an expert review from a practical wild life point of view.
Luck you - I keep looking - perhaps next year.

Colin Sais | Hahahaha! He's obviously not been back to the house since he got it Colin - he's still out in the wilds snapping away - enthralled - I guess it must be good then?!!!

Pauline | The vagrant in Stewy's other post about kindnesses was probably Dai as he can't afford a house now, only a tent and no internet

| | | Re: Canon 50D Sorry to keep you all waiting. The one day I have been out with it the weather was not to kind. The last 5 photographs I posted in the Gallerry were taken with the 50D. The ISO was between 400 and 640. I don't think they are as good as they could be, but that
is down to my PP, I have been messing about with my Monitor profile.
The Camera. It looks and feels like a 30D until you look at the back and see the 3in lcd which is brilliant. The live view is brilliant. Tests I have done in the house with a Macro lens shows that Live View has great potential. When you focus on a subject you can then increase magnification by 5x or 10x on the LCD so you can really see if the subject is in focus. One thing I noticed was when you increased the magnification on the LCD you can really see every little tremor when you just touch the camera even on a sturdy tripod.
With center spot using my 100-400mm the AiServo was fast and accurate. I did have a little problem at first as I was using the Shutter button to focus whereas I am more used to using a custom function on my 1D so that I focus with my thumb on the AE/lock button and then press the shutter button. Then I found out the 50D has a button just for this called AF-On.
Again tests done in the house show that there is less noise at high ISO levels than the 30D.
One big advantage is the 15 million mega pixels. I don't print my images but when I take a photograph of a small bird I can crop it more drastically because there is more information contained in the image.
The only small downside is the file sizes are larger, almost double the size on the 8.5 mega pixels on the 30D. When I bought it I had a free 8GB Extreme 111 card. I decided I don't need that size card and swapped it for a very large rucksack worth £119. When I got home and played with it I then realized thaI would need a bigger card so I went out and got a 4GB card. Shooting RAW I can get 178 images on the card.
So far no complaints at all.
I am not very good at writing this sort of thing but if anyone want to ask me something about the camera please do and I will try and answer any questions you have.
ps. Am I glad I went for the 50d instead of the 40D, YES

| | | Re: Canon 50D Thanks for all that Dai - smashing answer - look forward to seeing some results if the weather will belt up long enough to let you get out and about You should stand a good chance of cracking bird shots now simply cos you can crop - its always worth a go taking a pic and seeing what it will crop down to - its surprising sometimes how well things turn out - I always go for it now then wait to see what can be made of the pic when I get it on the computer

| | | Re: Canon 50D Thanks, too, Dai.
Look forward to seeing more pics.
I shall have to sell my body or something plus waiting until the price comes down next year. I probably wouldn't get very much for my body - the only thing it's good for now is to lug my camera around Come to think of it, I would probably get more for my 30D body.
