Refurbished equipment

Hi

I'm in the market for a DSLR and have my eye on either a 40D or 400D.

I noticed on Ebay that Canon are selling refurbished kit, with a years warranty and kit lens, which seem to be going for £250-300.

Has anyone bought refurbished kit before, is it a false economy?

Thanks

Olly

Re: Refurbished equipment

I've not heard much about it but I'm of the impression that if it's a Canon market place on the auction site then you're ok. Just have a good look at the page and check there are no dodgy looking bits.

I personally would buy refurbished equipment from Canon or another reputable brand, dealer.

Chris

Re: Refurbished equipment

I've not bought refurbished kit, but I've not seen anything but good comments about the Canon shop. And if you get the chance, go for the 40D. I've just upgraded and while I have absolutely no complaints about the 400D, the 40D is class above it.

Thanks for the replies, and I am tempted by the 40D, just not sure if I can justify the extra cost at the moment but have heard its an excellent camera.

Re: Refurbished equipment

Rumours are getting rife that the canon 50d may be released as soon as October as sales are poor against the Nikon. If you can wait, then 40D's may well start dropping in price very shortly.

Supposedly, more pixels and lower noise, but of course this is still only a rumour!

Re: Refurbished equipment

I've bought three refurbished items, one camera from the Canon site, a printer and a surround sound speaker system. All were to my eyes at least, as good as new and performed perfectly.

Re: Refurbished equipment

I bought my refurbished Canon 30D from the Canon outlet on Ebay. It looked as if it was brand new and was boxed with all cables etc. It was a very good buy. However I have heard a number of scare stories about that trader, particularly relating to their customer service if something goes wrong. It's not actually Canon, although presumably Canon has authorised this trader to sell their stock so you would hope they've been vetted in some sense. So there may be a slight element of risk but the products seem fine in my experience.

Matt

Re: Refurbished equipment

I did the same as Matt. The camera came boxed and in great condition with a year's warranty. It has not failed yet. I guess a 40D is a better option than 30D, if you can stretch to it.

Regards
Jon

Re: Refurbished equipment

My gf bought a Canon S2 off said retailer a while ago and still no problems so they'd get a thumbs up from me.

Re: Refurbished equipment

Ditto for me with my 2 purchases from that retailer. Both came in Canon boxes with Canon seals, looked brand new (absolutely no blemishes, scratches, etc) and still work fine. I bought a Canon 350D and later a 75-300 III USM lens and would highly recommend them off my experiences anyway.
Good luck with your buy (and I'd go for the 40D if you could stretch to it too)
