Sigma 150-500

Hi All,

I know I don't really qualify to post on your website, but I found it while searching for info on the Sigma 150-500 lens. I have appreciated the range of opinions, and enjoyed the photos of birds from your part of the world.

Have just purchased this lens and include a sample photo from my first outing with it.
Initial impressions of the lens - focus is quiet and fast, easy to use hand-held.

Cheers PhilT

Re: Sigma 150-500

Hello PhilT and welcome to WAB

Both of the 200-500 lenses currently available are good glass for the money, I think the picture you just posted proves that. Excellent shot.

Denis.

Re: Sigma 150-500

Hey PhilT,

Welcome to WAB. Great shot of a lovely colourful bird. It looks a little soft around the head on my monitor and I would personally prefer a little room above the head but otherwise it's a lovely shot for a first outing.

Hope you find a lot of useful advice here.

Chris

Re: Sigma 150-500

Thank You all for the welcome. What a great site !!! I have not found a website anything like this here in Australia. You are lucky to have it, and can be proud of what you have achieved.

Thanks also for the comments on the photo. I took about 70 frames of this bird, from about 15' distance. Each time the shutter noise caused him to flick his head. Most of the photos show beak movement as a result. Also I focussed on his back, at f8 the depth of field was obviously not enough.
ISO was 100, shutter at 1/250. I am using a Canon 400D, tripod mounted, with the optical stabiliser turned off. The photo posted was jpeg unprocessed, although cropped a little to reduce the file size without reducing quality.

I am going to visit the same spot in the morning. He and his mates are usually there. If I can get close again, I will try some different settings to try to improve the sharpness.

Cheers for now

Phil

Re: Sigma 150-500

Hi Phil, Just try ISO 400,aperature around f8 and try and get a speed of at least 1/500sec. This should allow you to get a sharper image.

Hi Phil and welcome. Nice pic. I too have just purchased a 150-500 but havent been able to get out with it yet. First impressions are that its well built, big and heavy! I am impressed.
